Year 2 to Year 3 Transition
Beginning a new school can be a daunting experience for children of any age and equally for their parents. At Stocksbridge Junior School, we work closely with the infant schools in our area to plan a cohesive programme to ensure the transition from Year 2 to Year 3 is as smooth as possible for both children and parents alike.
Throughout the year, when children are in Year 2, opportunities are provided to gradually introduce your child to Stocksbridge Junior School. Our Year 3 teachers visit the Year 2 classes in their infant setting and liaise with the children’s current teachers, the Year 2 children visit Stocksbridge Junior School a number of times, sometimes for an assembly or short activity and, on other occasions, spending a full day or series of full days getting to know their new teacher and teaching assistants.
For children who may be less confident, additional transition opportunities are provided for them to become familiar with their new surroundings before they start school in September. We find this minimises any anxieties that might exist and encourages all children look forward to starting their new school.
Applying for a place in Year 3
As we are a junior school, parents wishing for their child to join Stocksbridge Junior School at the beginning of Year 3 must complete an application through Sheffield School Admissions. Online applications must be made before the deadline in December; paper applications may be made up until the beginning of January. As with any parent considering Stocksbridge Junior School for their child, we strongly encourage parents to visit school. Please contact the school office to arrange an appointment.
In April each year, Sheffield School Admissions provides us with the contact details of all children that have been offered a place in Year 3 for September. Parents are then invited to transition meetings to get to know their junior school, meet their child’s new teachers and ask any questions to help their child look forward to the next stage of their education.
Our admissions arrangements are available on our policies and documents page.

In-Year Admissions
Stocksbridge Junior School participates in the local authority's co-ordinated admission scheme for in-year admissions.
If a parent of a child on our roll wishes to apply for a transfer to another school, they must obtain a transfer form from the child's current school for completion of section 2. The application must then be sent to the local authority, which will process the application on the parent's behalf. The local authority will confirm the outcome of the application in writing within 15 school days. If the application is refused, the local authority will advise on the statutory appeal procedure. Details of the co-ordinated admission scheme and how in-year applications are managed can be viewed on the Sheffield City Council school admissions webpage.
Although admissions procedures are handled by the Primary Admissions Team at Sheffield City Council, we strongly encourage any parent considering Stocksbridge Junior School for their child, to get in touch with school to arrange an appointment to visit us.
Our Attendance Policy is available from the Chorus Trust website at www.chorustrust.org/policies.
